Clark Schreibeis, a professional wildlife carver/sculptor and native of Billings, Mt recently won Best in World honors in the Decorative Life-size Division as well as Judge`s Choice Best of Show at the April 20, 2007 World Fish Carving Championships in Reno, Nevada.

Schreibeis has been awarded Best of Show with wins in `95, `97, `99 and now 2007. Wood carvers from around the World have competed in the biannual World Championship, the largest event of it`s kind. Since the show`s beginning in 1985, ten people have attained "World Champion" status and seven, from as far away as Russia and the Netherlands, were in attendance at this 2007 show.

Created and carved entirely from wood, the winning woodcarving/sculpture titled, "Danger at the Cleaning Station" is a depiction of several unique and interesting fish of Hawaii`s coral reef with a pair of small yet vibrantly beautiful Hawaiian Cleaner Wrasse being the primary players.

Other fish in the scene vying for the Cleaner`s attention are four Pyramid Butterflyfish and one Moorish Idol which all have beautiful, graceful lines and striking colors.

The "Danger" that lurks below at the base of this tranquil scene is nestled and perfectly hidden among the brilliant colors of the sponges and algae that live on the coral. This dangerous and voracious carnivore is none other than the Titan Scorpionfish, which is a master of camouflage and is almost impossible to visually detect in its habitat.

Schreibeis was born in Wyoming and raised in Montana. His passion for wildlife of all types is evident in his carvings with the species of the Rocky Mountain west (and Montana`s trout in particular) being his primary focus. He has had a life-long love affair with rivers and the myriad of species that make their home in and around their life-giving waters.

"Life is good when I`m piloting my canoe down a river and camping on its gravel bars." He explains. "While floating, camping and fishing on the river, I delight in being an active partaker and participant and not just an intrusive foreigner. God created all this beauty for us to enjoy and I take great pleasure in drawing people`s attention to that beauty with my art."

Carving the beautiful fish of Hawaii`s great coral reefs is a slight departure for him but it is not the first time he has ventured into this realm with success. In 1997, a piece commissioned by Art Westwood, of Billings, won Best of Show at the World Championships. Westwood commissioned Schreibeis and produced another big win this year with "Danger at the Cleaning Station".

Clark and his wife Erika live outside of Billings, Montana and are blessed with three sons and a daughter, two of whom are still at home. He owns and operates the Clark Schreibeis Wildlife Art Studio and currently divides his time between sculpting in wood and bronze, judging competitions, teaching carving classes in his studio and around the country and, of course, seeking out wild places whenever he can.
