Fish Carving and Natural Finish Carving

This is your personal invitation to come and learn more in a short period of time than you ever thought possible, and if your time allows, experience some fishing you'll never forget.

Since 1996, experienced fish carvers and novices alike, from across the continent, have taken advantage of Clark`s workshops and seminars to improve their skills and grow in their understanding of woodcarving and artistic principles with dramatic results. Some of his students have gone on to win top awards throughout North America including both Best of Show in the Novice and Intermediate levels at the World Fish Carving Championships and also World Championship titles in both the Natural Finish and  Miniature Divisions.

Clarks studio, near Billings, Montana is located in a relaxed setting within a few hour’s drive of some of the most renowned trout streams in America including the Bighorn, Yellowstone, Boulder and Stillwater Rivers, all of which sustain healthy populations of Brown and Rainbow Trout. Also, less than 1 hour away is the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness area in the famous Beartooth Mountains which rise to an elevation well over 12,000 feet and is located just north of Yellowstone National Park. These spectacular and scenic mountains hold hundreds of backcountry lakes and creeks that sustain large populations of Cutthroat, Golden, and Brook trout as well as Grayling. If you’ve never been to the Beartooths, you owe yourself a day or two of fishing and sightseeing in these fantastic mountains. They are truly spectacular and the late Charles Kurault labeled the Beartooth highway, "the most scenic drive in the Lower 48."

Clark's workshops may focus on all aspects of carving a fish. Individual preferences and desires can be focused on such as:

  • Collecting references including study casts
  • Fish reference photography

  • Selection of woods
  • Power carving with a flexible shaft carving unit
  • Power carving with a high-speed detail carving unit
  • Carving with accuracy
  • Color, paint and airbrush techniques
  • Advanced finishing and detailing techniques

  • Habitat carving and construction
  • Interpretive or natural finish carving
  • Composition and design
  •

Clark offers two types of workshops at his Billings, MT studio; group and individual "one-on-one”:

    Group Workshops

Group workshops in Clark’s studio are "hands-on" and the class size is limited to seven, (although it rarely reaches that size) providing plenty of individualized instruction. Each step of the carving process is demonstrated for the student and then Clark will oversee and guide the students as he/she actually performs the task on their own fish carving, habitat, etc., while having all questions plainly and thoroughly answered.

These classes are power carving using flexible shaft power carving units such as the Foredom. High-speed carvers are also used for carving as well as burners with a small assortment of burning tips. Students are expected to supply their own flexible shaft carver, burner and dust collection unit.   Detail (high speed) carving units are recommended but not mandatory.

In all classes requiring an airbrush, you may bring and use your own or test-drive one of Clark's Badger 100G's or the new Renegade Velocity for painting fine details.  "Woods and Waters" Brand acrylic airbrush paints will be used and provided by Clark or you may bring your own.

    Housing
For group workshops you need to secure your own accommodations and major motels are located within 10 minutes of the studio. Lunches will be provided and you are on your own for breakfast and dinner. RV’s and tents are allowed and there is a nice area with picnic tables and campfire area that you are also welcome to.

    Food
Lunch, coffee and snacks will be provided and you're on your own for breakfast and dinner unless the students plan a group dinner/BBQ. Many restaurants are within 10 minutes of the studio.

    Materials
All materials such as wood, paint, glass eyes, paint schedule, pattern, etc that is needed to do the agreed upon project will be provided by the instructor at no extra charge.

Upon registration for workshops, you will be sent a list of suggested tools, etc that you should bring, a list of items we provide and a detailed list of bits, burrs and paints. All carving bits and burrs used in the class will be available for purchase at the workshop.

    Attention Fishcarvers!

Unless things change, there may be only one group carving class scheduled for 2018. One on one workshops are still being scheduled. Don’t miss the following opportunity:

    Group Carving Workshop – August 13-18, 2018

    Carve and Paint a 12-inch rainbow trout - $600.00

In this 6-day hands-on workshop we will carve the ever popular Rainbow Trout.  All students will carve an accurate fish with the dorsal and anal fins carved on the fish while the tail and paired fins will be carved and  inserted separately. We will place a large emphasis on correct anatomy, color, “attitude”  and how to capture the essence of individual species. Texturing and scaling will be covered along with how to make your own study casts.   The week will conclude with the painting of your fish, airbrushing with acrylic paints, with a lot of the innovative tricks and tips that Clark has learned and developed over the years.  If carvers are not quite finished with their fish when it is time to paint, a carved fish casting will be available for painting and/or purchase. In a 6 day class there should be enough time to address other scaling techniques, habitat, etc or whatever questions you may have.  This is an intensive week with lots of techniques and concepts covered so bring your notebook and be ready to learn a lot!

Additional group workshops may be added. Let Clark know if you are interested in a particular subject or species that is not listed above and would like to see a class in the future  on that topic. The squeaky wheels get the grease!

A note to carving clubs and other organizations: Clark is willing to come to your location for a workshop or bring your club to Clark’s shop for a workshop. If you are interested in having Clark come to your location to have him teach a workshop please contact him directly.

Individual, One-on-One, "Hands On" Fish Carving Workshops

Individual, one-on-one, hands-on workshops are tailored for each individual's level of experience.  Each step of the carving process is demonstrated for the student and then Clark will oversee and guide the student as he/she actually performs the task on their own fish carving, habitat, etc., while having all questions plainly and thoroughly answered. These workshops can be scheduled for whatever time is convenient for Clark and yourself. The instruction can be directed at any area you wish to learn, including anatomy, habitat, casting, painting, and more. And also you can tailor your length of stay to suit your need from one to six days or more.

In a typical five or six day workshop, students will have the time to carve and paint an accurate fish of their choosing (from start to finish) to keep and enjoy. Fins can be carved out of the same block of wood as the body or for added strength (and when necessary) fins can be inserted using Clark`s "no fill" method of fin attachment. A large emphasis is placed on anatomical accuracy and how to correctly portray the "essence of the species" which brings the fish to life.

Texturing, scaling and airbrushing with acrylics will be covered along with how to make your own study casts (if desired). If carvers are not quite finished with their fish carving when it is time to paint, an optional carved fish casting will be available for painting and/or purchase. Again, the beauty of one-on-one instruction is the student has the ability to control and steer the focus of the workshop and depending on the difficulty of the project, a lot of other various areas can be demonstrated and/or discussed to fit his/her own area of interest. Feel free to let your desires be known.

FLYING IN AND/OR WANT TO LIGHTEN YOUR LOAD?

Having had to fly to various places around the country with all my power carving equipment, I realize at times packing all that stuff through the air terminals can be cumbersome.
